This course addresses the concerns regarding safety of botanical medicine for pregnancy and lactation. Students gain understanding of the rationale behind herbs listed as contraindicated or for use with caution in various herbal textbooks. The course discusses the research that informs these safety categories and mechanism of action of constituents that may interfere with pregnancy and lactation. Students learn about the main risks associated with herbs in pregnancy and lactation and the chemical constituents of interest in assessing health outcomes. The course also covers safe effective herbal protocols for care during pregnancy and lactation

Prerequisites: Any 2 WHS Materia Medica courses, BMS101/102, WHS202    Credits: 3    Hours: 45
