Workshop Instructor

Illya Borreson, R.Ac, has over 20 years of experience in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He obtained his Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine Diploma at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Victoria, B.C. (2002).  He concluded his studies with an internship at Tianjing Second University Hospital in Tianjing, China.  His intensive experience there sparked a profound appreciation for Chinese culture, philosophy and tradition. Illya’s residency in China also fostered a strong commitment to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and he has been devoted to his practice ever since.

Illya moved to China in 2006 and worked at Shanghai East International Medical Hospital.  After a year and a half of observing a wide variety of health modalities there – including physiotherapy and chiropractic medicine – he then moved to southeast Thailand where he joined the team at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa Resort.

Recognized for its outstanding Traditional Chinese Medicine department and signature health retreats, Kamalaya is one of the leading holistic medical spas in Asia. While practicing there, Illya worked together with doctors from Naturopathic, Ayurvedic and Western medical backgrounds to achieve the health goals of his clients. He learned specialized techniques for cosmetic acupuncture under the mentorship of esteemed Chinese Medicine Doctor, Bruce Song.

Upon returning to Canada in late 2008, Illya brought his unique experience to Victoria. He founded Victoria Community Acupuncture + Spa in 2011, and dedicated five years to building a multi-disciplinary clinic which is still thriving today.

Illya joined the faculty at Pacific Rim College from 2015 – 2019, and opened an independent private practice, Aculoft, in 2016 where he currently practices and teaches.

Illya has spent the past decade developing Acusculpting®. He has enjoyed teaching this unique cosmetic acupuncture protocol over the years in his clinic, and in 2021, he launched his course online which was met with ample enthusiasm across the globe. The interest in these advanced techniques have garnered attention from acupuncturists in London, New York, Paris, New Zealand, and Canada, all who have successfully incorporated these modules into their practice. Illya has adapted his teachings to a digital format to include video calls and recorded video tutorials in support of online learning and international demand. Illya looks forward to returning to Pacific Rim College to teach Acusculpting® in person and share his love of acupuncture with students and acupuncturists alike!
