Aromatic Medicine: An Introduction
with Peter Conway, October 20-21, 2018
“Aromatic Medicine” can be described as the medical use of essential oils (volatile oils), including taking them internally by mouth. It is a therapeutic modality that has huge potential especially at this time of antibiotic crisis where the microbial modulating effects of essential oils could be part of the solution. Peter Conway considers aromatic medicine to be a vital branch of herbal medicine albeit one that is insufficiently appreciated – this seminar aims to address this by providing a solid grounding in this very powerful approach.
The course will indicate the full therapeutic scope of aromatic medicine but will focus specifically on two interrelated treatment areas: infection and stress.
On this intensive course you will discover: the basics of volatile oil chemistry, the range of actions they possess, the indications they can address and the type of preparations that can be made. You will learn fundamentals such as how to use oils safely, where to obtain them and how to store them – but we will also consider more arcane matters such as the notions of “live embalming” and “aromatic acupuncture”!
During this course we will experience over 20 different essential oils.
Day 1 will include
Defining “Aromatic Medicine” and tracing its history
Orientation in volatile oil chemistry
General properties of volatile oils
Potential adverse effects
Quality, sourcing and storage
Preparations and indications
Aromatic medicine and the microbiome
Focus on treating infections part 1
Day 2 will include
Focus on treating infections part 2
Focus on treating stress
This course will be of particular interest to herbal medicine students and practitioners but also to other students and practitioners who have a deep interest in the therapeutic use of essential oils.
Essential oils will be used in the class continuously throughout the weekend so that this course may not be suitable for people with chemical sensitivities.
