Community Acupuncture 101

with Michael Lium-Hall, January 13-14, 2024

Workshop Information

In 2007 when Michael first opened his clinic, it was the first community acupuncture clinic in Canada affiliated with POCA (Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture), and the 18th such clinic in North America. Thirteen years later, there are now more than two hundred and fifty such clinics located throughout North America offering a combined total of nearly a million treatments a year. This clinic model offers tremendous value to the acupuncture profession as a whole and a tremendous value to our communities in terms of providing valuable health care needs. This two-day workshop will give you the opportunity to explore and understand the history and background of community acupuncture, why it’s such an effective service delivery model, and how to go about working within or starting your own community acupuncture clinic. Exploring community acupuncture as a unique service delivery model, we will examine the history, philosophy and fundamentals of community acupuncture, in order to gain a greater appreciation for its role within the larger practice of acupuncture. We will also examine and review the practical aspects of community acupuncture clinical practice and gain skills in patient care, assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

Day One: Fundamentals and Systems

Day one will be a combination of lecture and Q&A that focuses on:

  • History and Philosophy of Community Acupuncture
  • CA Business Plans and Marketing
  • Basic systems of Community Acupuncture (accessible, affordable, effective)

Day Two: Clinical Practice

Day two will be a combination of lecture, demonstration, and practice that will focus on:

  • Client centered acupuncture
  • Effective and efficient intake
  • Review of Channel-Based Acupuncture
  • Holding space, safety, patience confidentiality
  • Developing effective treatment strategies

Workshop Instructor

Michael Lium-Hall began having visions of community acupuncture many years ago as he was sitting in an acupuncture class. The visions continued until 2007 when he saw them in practice during his first visit to Working Class Acupuncture, one of the first community clinics, located in Portland Oregon. He returned home, inspired to help community acupuncture take root in Canada, and to construct his vision of CA in Victoria, BC. Since opening hemma community acupuncture clinic in 2007 he has dedicated his work and teaching to the continued growth of community acupuncture in Victoria and throughout North America.

Michael has accumulated nearly thirty years of study and practice in the fields of; Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Massage, Yoga Therapy, and Addictions, all of which inform his practice. He studied Acupuncture in San Francisco and Victoria and has been licensed to practice in B.C. since 2004.  Michael has served on the faculty of both the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and the Pacific Rim College. He also served on the board of the Community Acupuncture Network (now POCA), and currently serves as a Canada representative for POCA, providing education and support for people interested in establishing CA clinics in their communities throughout Canada.
