Deep Dive into Zhan Zhuang Qi Gong

with Rory Knapp-Fisher, December 4-5, 2021

Workshop Description

Zhan Zhuang is quite possibly the simplest, most ubiquitous, and most important form of qi gong.  Literally ‘standing like a post’, it is the act of standing for extended periods in meticulously detailed positions. Zhan Zhuang appears as a day-one exercise in virtually every style of qi gong and martial art from China. While there are multiple variations and aims behind them, the root of the practice remains the same, and the practice is the root of good qi gong, good gong fu, and good bodywork practice.

In this workshop we will examine a few variations of Zhan Zhuang from the Zhe Zong lineage of Gao Baguazhang. We will cover:

  • Brief history of Yi Jin Jing (Tendon Changing Classic) theory and how it relates to Zhan Zhuang
  • The anatomy of Zhan Zhuang
  • Guided group practice and partner work
  • Application to clinical practice practice
  • Relationship to Daoist meditation

The result of this workshop will be a workable understanding of how to perform Zhan Zhuang as an exercise of personal cultivation, as well as how to apply the principles in clinical practice for the benefit of yourself and your patients.
