Nutritional & Lifestyle Biomarkers: Supporting your Patient’s Genetic Challenges to Optimize their Health

with Bev Maya, December 2-3, 2023

Workshop Information

It has been estimated that genetics plays a role in a minority of health concerns on the planet. In contrast, appropriate lifestyle and nutrition have a significant impact on the development of inflammation and chronic disease.

This workshop will focus on the use and interpretation of a Lifestyle Genetic Test that is designed to empower individuals to improve their health and well-being by providing personalized and actionable recommendations for nutrition, exercise and lifestyle tailored to their own unique genetic makeup.

The test categories of the genetic test include:
– Nutrition: food preferences and limitations in absorption pathways including fat and carbohydrate consumption
– Food sensitivities including lactose, gluten, caffeine, alcohol and sodium
– Specific Nutrient needs such as Vitamin A, C, D, E and selected B vitamins, iron, choline, omega 3 fatty acid synthesis and antioxidant status
– Physical Fitness: what type of fitness activities are best suited for you based on genetic markers for bone health, pain tolerance, exercise motivation & recovery and injury risk
– Mental Wellbeing: neurotransmitter balance challenges including predisposition to addiction, mood, memory, cognitive performance & stress resilience
– Detoxification: analysis of common liver detoxification pathways including sulfur removal, glutathione status, ability to remove smoked and charred meat toxins, and histamine removal
– Obesity risk including preference for dietary fat, risk score for obesity, eating behaviour and regulation of appetite and food intake
– Heart health: eating for heart health, omega-3 fatty acid status, Vitamin B12 and folate production and risk of heart disease
– Hormonal Health: including estrogens, testosterone and thyroid pathways

Every genetic marker included in this test has an actionable treatment solution that minimizes the impact the specific atypical marker has on one’s long term health.

Bev will provide sample reports to each participant for analysis. There will also be an opportunity for the participant to complete their own genetic lifestyle test prior to the workshop in order that they may analyze their own results and gain a deeper understanding of their own genetic challenges. This will also provide the participant with an immediately actionable plan to optimize their own overall health.

During the workshop, there will be both class instruction as well as group dialogue in order to deepen each participant’s understanding of the material being presented in the workshop.

The content in this workshop has the potential to drastically improve patient treatment success through a deep knowledge of their own inherent barriers to optimal health. The workshop is applicable to many types of professionals including herbalists, nutritionists, personal trainers and fitness consultants.

Workshop Instructor

Back in university, Bev Maya, B.Sc. (Hon), D. Phyt., MNIMH, AHG, earned a reputation as a tenacious inquisitive driven to make sense of nature through scientific endeavours. This reputation has withstood the test of time. Today, as a practicing Medical Herbalist and international speaker at medical conferences and colleges, Bev focuses on demystifying menopause for patients that don’t respond to traditional medicine.
Bev’s unique background informs her deep investigative approach. Her science studies led her to work in fundamental research, pharmaceuticals, anaesthesia, oncology, urology, transplantation and neurology for twelve years before training as a Medical Herbalist and opening her own clinic. This unique blend of education and experience provided her with a rare ability to study the intricacies of our nervous, endocrine and digestive systems for physiological, emotional and spiritual root causes to medical concerns associated with the menopausal process, some of them deep seated and lifelong.

Bev’s inquiring personality (encouraged by both parents being teachers) has lent itself to her style, as a generous and passionate speaker particularly adept at empowering her audience to deconstruct complex ideas into their simplest form and apply this learning in the context of their own medical practices.

In addition to her work at Maya Natural Health, Bev also works in collaboration with several Medical Doctors specializing in wholistic solutions during midlife at Westcoast Women’s Centre for Hormone Health, Vancouver, B.C.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biology and chemistry are encouraged. As we will be discussing genetic mutations and their impact on health, a good working knowledge of nutrition would also be helpful. All of these are not mandatory. The most important prerequisite is an open and inquiring mind!
