Workshop Information

The objectives of this course are to provide a broad introduction to operating a Micro Dairy (or just owning a dairy cow) with a focus on producing safe, healthy and whole raw milk.

The course will provide information on:

• The History of Milking
• The Laws related to Raw Milk
• Cattle, Cows and Milk
• The Benefits of Raw Milk, especially in comparison to Pasteurized Milk
• A1 versus A2 Milk
• Bacteria, Pathogens, Pasteurization, Homogenization, and Milk Testing
• Animal Welfare and Veterinary Practices
• Holistic and Ethical Dairy Farming Practices
• Milking Practices and Equipment
• And a number of other related considerations

For students who are interested in getting hands-on experience in milking and operating a tiny dairy farm (or owning a cow), there will be additional opportunities to shadow or train with the instructor, which can be arranged directly with the instructor.

Workshop Instructor

Steve runs a tiny ethical dairy farm just north of Victoria. In the summer of 2013 he had a chance encounter with a nutritionist who happened to mention that he should drink raw milk. Three months later he had his first three cows. So began a challenging, fascinating, sometimes frustrating and sad, but undeniably amazing journey that he hopes will never end.

His passion for cows and raw milk continues to grow and he loves sharing that passion with anyone who might (or might not) be interested!
