The Birthworker Experience
with Michelle Maclean and Laura Interlandi, November 23-24, 2019
The field of doula work has been expanding and evolving at a rapid pace. What does it mean to hold space for someone across a major life threshold? How does support feel for different family configurations? Why might someone make one birth choice over another? And what can we do in scenarios where there may feel like no choices at all? Join experienced doulas Michelle Maclean and Laura Interlandi as we explore these questions, deconstruct popular notions and expand our skill sets. Whether you are doula-curious, a working doula, or a practitioner that intersects with the perinatal period, you are welcome in this space. Together we will work through common needs, support tools and client scenarios to help you birth and/or expand your doula mindset.
Day 1: Supporting Fertility, Pregnancy and Birth
Day 2: Supporting Postpartum, Parenting and Milestone Moments
Important note: While this workshop will absolutely give you a sense of what doula work is and how doulas work with clients, this weekend curriculum is not designed as a “doula training” nor will yield a certification. Michelle Maclean has been a full spectrum doula for 15 years. Her service field includes private practice and public service through various organizations serving marginalized people in Vancouver’s downtown core including the Trans and Queer Pregnancy and Parenting Group through Strathcona Midwifery Collective and the South Community Birth Program. A highly respected doula in the field, Michelle has attended over 1200 births, mentored hundreds of doulas and always approaches her work with non judgment and inclusion at the forefront.
Laura Interlandi is a postpartum centric full spectrum doula and co-founder of Birdsong Brooklyn. She has trained and worked across multiple organizations including co-writing the Carriage House Birth Postpartum Doula training with her Birdsong partner Erica Livingston. She offers community support classes at The Cowichan Midwifery Collective and serves families in private practice from Victoria to Nanaimo. Laura credits her expansive view on support to the many mentors and families she was humbled to learn from during her 7 years of living and mothering in New York City.
